Error
Description
Alan Scott discovered this variety in May 2004, designated VAM-19 for the 1901 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar under the plate identification 19 III2 7 - C4d (Doubled Profile and UNITED) with rarity not yet determined. This variety exhibits doubling on both sides: the obverse shows a doubled profile on Liberty, while reverse die C4d displays slight doubling on UNITED and on the middle olive leaf of the second-from-top left wreath leaf cluster, displaced toward the rim. Dual-sided doubling is less common than single-sided varieties because it requires hub misalignment affecting both die faces. An additional diagnostic appears on at least two known specimens: a filled letter e in We on the reverse, caused by die fill where debris packed into the recessed die area, preventing the letter from striking up fully. The 1901 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar is among the key dates for business strikes in the series. Collectors should check both the obverse profile and reverse UNITED for doubling, and look for the filled e in We as a confirming marker. =1901-P VAM-19 Doubled Profile and UNITED= Discovered by Alan Scott, May 2004.
