1901 Repunched Date WRPD-001

Description

Leading the Wexler Team's catalog of repunched dates for the 1901 Barber Dime, WRPD-001 exhibits 1901/1 repunching directed south — a secondary impression of the digit 1 visible below its primary position. This variety also carries a secondary attribution as WDDO-001, with weak spread on M and E of AMERICA. The convergence of a repunched date and doubled die obverse on the same die makes this a dual-variety specimen. Multiple cross-references span three cataloging systems: Lawrence L-101, Flynn RPD-001, and Wexler Variety ID 1901 10-cent WRPD-001. The Barber Dime series, designed by Charles E. Barber and produced from 1892 to 1916, predates mechanized date hubbing, meaning each die received its date through hand-punching. The southward repunching on the 1 indicates the punch drifted downward between applications, leaving a faint secondary impression. The weak AMERICA doubling requires careful examination but adds attribution depth beyond the more visible date repunching.
