Description

The 1901-O RPM-001 is a repunched mintmark variety on the New Orleans Mint Barber Dime, part of the series designed by Charles E. Barber that ran from 1892 through 1916. The O mintmark on the reverse was punched into the working die more than once, with the secondary impression offset from the primary position, leaving visible traces of the initial placement beneath or alongside the final mintmark. Repunched mintmarks were a routine consequence of the hand-punching process used at branch mints: a worker positioned the mintmark punch against the die face and struck it with a mallet, and any misalignment required a corrective second impression. The condition of the known specimen is too low to show die markers that could help identify the variety independently of the mintmark itself — an honest limitation that underscores the importance of higher-grade examples for thorough die-state documentation. The 1901-O Barber Dime saw moderate production at New Orleans, and while the base date is collectible in circulated grades, locating an example with this specific repunched mintmark requires careful reverse examination under magnification.

  • Unfortunately the condition on this dime is too low to show any die markers that could help identify the variety.
