Description
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen in October 1982 and catalogued as 2A1 III2 2 C3a, the 1900-O Morgan Dollar VAM-2A1 is titled "Polished Wheat Stalks" for the most immediately recognizable obverse characteristic. The obverse (III2 2) carries heavy polishing lines concentrated around the wheat stalks — evidence of die refurbishing intended to extend die life — accompanied by a very slight doubling of the ear at the right interior. The reverse (C3a) carries two markers: a very short diagonal die gouge at the junction of the eagle's left wing and leg, and diagonal die scratches in the eagle's left wing at the lower inner feathers. An important cross-reference note: the 1900-O VAM-2A1 and VAM-2A2 are the exact same die pair, meaning photographs and diagnostics for one apply to the other. The 1900-O Morgan Dollar is a frequently encountered date in the series. The wheat stalk polishing lines on this variety are a primary visual cue accessible without high magnification, making VAM-2A1 a relatively approachable attribution for collectors developing their Morgan Dollar variety identification skills.
