1900-O VAM-23

Description

Discovered by Maurice Dubreuil in February 1975, 1900-O VAM-23 is documented as 23 III2 15 C3l with the attribution Near Slanted Date, High O. The obverse is classified as III2 15, with the date set further left than normal and slanted, the 1 positioned very close to the rim. The reverse is C3l, carrying a high O mintmark. An important cautionary note accompanies this attribution: VAM-23 has none of the features that would distinguish it as anything beyond the base variety, earning it the informal role of "mother of the 23 series." Collectors should take care not to confuse this variety with a late die state of VAM-14, as the near-slanted date and high O can superficially resemble certain VAM-14 states. The 1900-O Morgan dollar has a robust VAM population reflecting the active research community that has thoroughly documented this date. Morgan dollars are 90% silver, designed by George T. Morgan. The near-slanted date with the 1 close to the rim and the high O mintmark are the primary identification features, with careful comparison to VAM-14 die states recommended before finalizing attribution.
