1900-O VAM-21H

Description

Among the more recently cataloged additions to the 1900-O Morgan Dollar VAM series, this variety was discovered by Pete Hohnstein in March 2023. Classified as III2 5 - C3l, VAM-21H combines a near date position with a high O mintmark and a faint partial clashed letter T visible in Liberty's hair vee on the obverse. The date sits further left than normal, and a distinguishing die marker appears as a die crack running from the top of the numeral 1 upward through the lower hair curls, terminating at the bottom edge of Liberty's cap. On the reverse, the C3l designation identifies the specific die used in this pairing, with a DPIS measurement of LE3/RH4 documenting the die position. The presence of a clash mark from the reverse T of TRUST transferred onto the obverse during a misaligned strike without a planchet adds another diagnostic layer to this variety. New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollars continue to yield fresh discoveries more than a century after production, and VAM-21H demonstrates that patient examination of even heavily studied dates can still expand the catalog.
