1900-O VAM-21A

Description

First reported in 2006, the 1900-O VAM-21A combines multiple diagnostics into one of the more visually dramatic late-date Morgan Dollar varieties. Classified as 21A III2 5 C3l, this New Orleans Mint issue features a near date position, a high-set O mintmark, and significant die cracking on the reverse. Reverse die state C3l shows a die crack through the tops of the letters MERI in AMERICA, with a wide break at the top left of M extending to the rim and along its right side, plus a small die chip above I. This progression of cracks indicates a reverse die in an advanced state of deterioration — still functional but accumulating damage that would eventually force retirement. The 1900-O Morgan Dollar was struck at New Orleans in the standard 90% silver, 10% copper composition. New Orleans operated as a branch mint from 1838 to 1909, and its Morgan Dollars are collected for their Southern provenance and the distinctive striking characteristics that the facility's equipment often imparted.
