1900-O VAM-17

Description

Discovered by Maurice Dubreuil in January 1975, this 1900-O Morgan Dollar is classified as VAM-17 III2 11 - C3l (Near Slanted Date, Doubled 9, High O). The obverse (III2 11) shows the date set further left than normal and slanted with the 0s positioned higher than the 1, an open 9, and the 9 doubled as a thin curved line below the bottom loop and to the lower left of the upper loop. The reverse die is designated C3I with the mint mark set high. The near slanted date placement distinguishes this variety from normal-position 1900-O specimens, and the doubled 9 adds a secondary diagnostic element. Dubreuil’s 1975 discovery places this among the mid-decade wave of VAM research when the Van Allen-Mallis cataloging system was gaining widespread adoption. New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollars from 1900 are among the more available dates in the series, and die varieties like VAM-17 add depth for collectors who have already acquired type examples. The combination of date position, date slant, and doubled digit on the same obverse die makes this a multi-attribute variety with several distinct diagnostic checkpoints.
