1899-S VAM-1
Error
Description
Discovered by Francis Klaes in June 1963 — predating the formal Van Allen-Mallis catalog by more than a decade — the 1899-S VAM-1 represents the base variety for the San Francisco Mint issue, featuring a narrow, medium-size IV S mintmark positioned centered and upright. Classified as III2 1 - C3a (Narrow S) with a normal die of the III2 type featuring open 9s in the date and a normal C3 reverse die, this base VAM establishes the standard die characteristics against which all other 1899-S varieties are compared. The VAM-1 designation for any date typically represents the most common or the first-described die combination, serving as the baseline for the date's entry in the catalog. Francis Klaes's 1963 discovery places this attribution among the earliest in what would eventually become the comprehensive VAM catalog, published by Van Allen and Mallis in the 1970s. The "open 9s" description of the obverse die refers to the style of the numeral 9 in the date, where the loop has a wider opening — as opposed to closed or partially closed 9s found on other die varieties. The 1899-S Morgan Dollar had a mintage of approximately 2.56 million pieces, a relatively low San Francisco output that makes it moderately scarce in higher grades. The narrow S mintmark distinguishes this die pair from others that may have used a wider or differently positioned S punch. The Gilded Age San Francisco Mint processed silver arriving from western mining operations, and its Morgan Dollar production contributed to the Treasury's enormous stockpile of silver dollars accumulating in government vaults.
