1899 Indian Head Cent Die Clash (Portrait/Left Wreath)

Description

This 1899 Indian Head cent displays a die clash on the reverse where the front portrait and feather details from the obverse design have been transferred inside the left wreath. The Indian Head cent, designed by James Barton Longacre and produced from 1859 through 1909, was composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc beginning in 1864, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19 mm diameter and a plain edge. Philadelphia, the sole mint producing Indian Head cents at this date, struck 53,600,143 cents in 1899. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and great monetary debates, this coin represents an era when cent production was concentrated entirely at the original Philadelphia Mint facility. Die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring raised design elements from each die as incuse impressions on the opposing die, which then appear as raised features on subsequently struck coins. On this specimen, the portrait and feather details from Longacre's Indian Head obverse — depicting Liberty wearing a Native American headdress — transferred onto the reverse die within the left wreath area. The wreath reverse, which replaced the original laurel wreath design in 1860, features an oak wreath with a shield at the top, and the relatively open area inside the wreath provides a clear background against which clashed portrait details become visible.
