1898-P VAM-2C

Description

Discovered in 2010 by Pat Mullen, the 1898-P VAM-2C Morgan Dollar is classified III22 - C3a for Closed 9, Thread-like Impression and Scribbles Cotton Leaves. The obverse (III22) features a curvy thread-like impression at the right side of the top left cotton leaf and scribbling die scratches below the lower cotton leaf — a combination of incidental die features resulting from die maintenance or handling that left permanent marks on the die surface. The "closed 9" designation refers to the shape of the digit 9 in the date, where the interior loop of the numeral is filled or nearly filled, distinguishing it from "open 9" die varieties. Thread-like impressions on Morgan Dollar obverse dies are a recurring variety type, characterized by thin, raised linear features that may originate from metal fragments, polishing debris, or fibers trapped on the die surface during preparation. The cotton leaves flanking Liberty's Phrygian cap are frequently cited locations for scribbling die scratches because the relief of these botanical elements created recesses in the die where abrasive polishing agents accumulated. The 1898 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was struck from a mintage of 5,884,000 coins in 90% silver (10% copper) at 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm diameter with a reeded edge. The relatively modest 1898-P mintage places it in the middle tier of Morgan Dollar availability, and the Closed 9 date characteristic provides a quick preliminary screening point for cherry-pickers.
