Error
Description
Leonard Hinckley discovered this Philadelphia Morgan Dollar variety in February 1974. Classified as VAM-5, III2 5, C3a (Doubled 18) (188), the obverse shows the 1 doubled as a short spike below the upper crossbar and the 8 doubled slightly inside the top of the loops. Die Pair In Sequence values are LE3/RH4. The primary pick-up point for quick identification consists of two very visible parallel gouges in the middle of Liberty's ear, a diagnostic that allows experienced collectors to spot this variety rapidly without needing to examine the subtle date doubling first. Pick-up points are the single most efficient diagnostic features used for in-hand attribution, and prominent ear gouges are particularly effective because the ear is a natural focal point during examination. The doubling on the 1 and 8 while the remaining date digits appear normal indicates the hub doubling event primarily affected the left portion of the date area.
