1896-O VAM-6

Description

One of the earliest VAM discoveries for the 1896-O Morgan Dollar, VAM-6 was identified by Leroy Van Allen in December 1965 — the same year the foundational VAM reference was published. Cataloged with die pairing III2 3 and reverse C3c, this variety features doubled date digits: the 1 doubled to the top left and the 6 doubled strongly below and to the left. The date is set further right than normal, earning the Far Date designation. On the reverse, a medium O mintmark tilted slightly right provides an additional attribution point. Van Allen's discovery during the formative period of the VAM system illustrates how early cataloging focused on the most visually prominent varieties before expanding to subtler anomalies. The 1896-O New Orleans Morgan was produced in substantial quantity, and the Far Date positioning indicates this obverse die received its date logotype at a measurably different location than standard placement.
