Discovered in 2010 by Brent Fogelberg, the 1896-O VAM-24A is a die-break variety on the New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar. Cataloged as 24A III2 15 with classification C3a (Low Near Date, Die Break A), die pair 181, this variety combines an obverse with a low near date position and a distinctive reverse die break. The reverse exhibits a die crack from the top of the G in GOD upward through the A in STATES to the rim above A, accompanied by a slight displaced field break above the A — where the die surface shifted enough to create a visible step in the coin's field. Displaced field breaks represent a more advanced stage of deterioration than simple cracks, indicating the die was fracturing into segments that moved independently under striking pressure. The "A" suffix in the VAM designation distinguishes this die state from the parent VAM-24, reflecting progressive die damage.
