1895-S VAM-6

Description

VAM-6 of the 1895-S Morgan dollar is designated III2 1 - C3e as S Set High and Right. The obverse III2 1 presents a normal die with the date in normal lateral position. The primary obverse die marker consists of two short vertical scratches at the center of the top serif of the L in LIBERTY, useful for confirming the specific die. The reverse C3e features an S mintmark set slightly high and to the right of its standard position. DPIS is recorded as RH3/LE5, providing measurement data for the mintmark displacement. This variety represents the early die state of VAM-6A, which was formerly designated as VAM-1A before renumbering. Specimens of VAM-6 were struck before the die acquired the additional characteristics that define the later VAM-6A state. The 1895-S Morgan dollar had a mintage of 400,000, one of the lower San Francisco figures in the series, which limits the overall population for any individual variety. The mintmark position set high and right is the primary visual diagnostic, while the vertical scratches on the L serif confirm the specific obverse die.
