Description

Discovered by Guy Messing in October 1975, this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar carries the Doubled 1 attribution. The numeral 1 in the date exhibits slight doubling below the top crossbar, a subtle but diagnostically significant feature visible under moderate magnification. VAM-5 shares its obverse die with VAM-7, establishing a die-sharing relationship linking these two catalog entries through a common obverse paired with different reverses. This shared obverse connection helps researchers reconstruct the die rotation sequence at the New Orleans Mint during 1894 production. An image of this variety appears in the Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars, 3rd Edition, page 324, providing a published photographic reference. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW), the 1894-O had a mintage of approximately 1.72 million pieces, placing it among the lower-production New Orleans issues. Messing's 1975 discovery came during the formative period of systematic Morgan Dollar die variety research, when collectors were first developing the classification framework that would evolve into the comprehensive VAM catalog.
