Description
This 1894 Indian Head Cent exhibits a die clash on both the obverse and reverse, creating a bilateral clash pattern where transferred design elements are visible on each side of the coin. On the obverse, the letter C from the reverse inscription CENT is visible in front of Liberty's eye — a commonly observed clash transfer location on Indian Head Cents where the open field area before the portrait aligns with the C in CENT when the dies make direct contact. On the reverse, Liberty's forehead and nose from the obverse die are clashed under and through the letter C, creating the complementary transferred impression. The catalog notes that this is a different die pair than the other documented 1894 die clash, with the reverse showing a more focused transfer of the forehead and nose area rather than the broader portrait transfer seen on the alternate variety — a distinction that confirms two separate 1894 obverse dies experienced clash events, each at a slightly different alignment that produced distinct transfer patterns. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, and the resulting force imprints raised design elements from each die as incuse impressions into the opposing die face. The 1894 Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The 1894 mintage of approximately 16.8 million pieces required numerous die pairs throughout the year's production, and the existence of multiple clash varieties for this date documents that die-on-die contact events were not isolated incidents.
