Description
This 1894 Indian Head Cent displays die clash evidence on both the obverse and reverse — a bilateral clash where each die transferred elements to the other during one or more die-to-die impacts without an intervening planchet. On the obverse, the letter C from CENT on the reverse is visible in front of Liberty's eye, while on the reverse, most of the front of Liberty's portrait appears as a clashed impression transferred from the obverse die. This is the characteristic die clash pattern observed across the Indian Head Cent series, where the high-relief portrait of Liberty and the prominent letter C are the most commonly transferred elements due to their physical proximity when the obverse and reverse dies meet without a planchet — the C on the reverse die sits directly opposite Liberty's facial area on the obverse die, making this the highest-pressure contact zone during a clash event. The bilateral nature — with both dies showing transferred elements from the opposing die — confirms a direct die-to-die impact rather than a less complete clash that might only mark one die. The 1894 Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The 1894 had a mintage of approximately 16.8 million pieces. Die clashes on Indian Head Cents are a recognized collecting specialty, with the C/Portrait pattern being the most frequently encountered clash type for this series due to the consistent die-face geometry across all years of production from 1860 through 1909. Examination under 5x to 10x magnification reveals the transferred C most clearly in the open field in front of Liberty's profile.
