Description

Discovered by Larry Briggs in April 2000 and classified as 6 (revised) III26 C3a, this 1893-P Morgan Dollar variety shows doubled 89 in the date along with a doubled ear and lower hair, combined with a near date position. The obverse (III26) displays doubling on the numerals 89, with the date positioned closer to the rim than normal. The ear and lower hair also show doubling, providing additional attribution points on the portrait. The die pair number 189 places this within the DPIS framework. Larry Briggs is a well-known Morgan Dollar researcher whose variety attributions carry significant weight in the collecting community. The near date positioning combined with the doubled digits creates a variety with both macro-level and micro-level diagnostics — the date placement is visible at a glance while the ear and hair doubling reward closer inspection. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1893 Morgan Dollar is a date of moderate scarcity, and the Philadelphia Mint issue is overshadowed in rarity by the famous 1893-S key date.
