1893 Medal Eglit-22 Silver-Plated Copper The John Scott Medal
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This silver-plated copper version of the 1893 Eglit-22 medal is the John Scott Medal in its more formal presentation finish. The silver plating elevates the appearance of the copper substrate to approximate the look of a solid silver piece, befitting the prestige of one of America's oldest and most distinguished scientific awards. The John Scott Legacy Medal and Premium, established by Edinburgh-born Philadelphia druggist John Scott's 1816 bequest, has honored inventors and scientists whose work benefits humanity since the City Trusts of Philadelphia began administering the award in 1834. The medal's association with the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago places it within the context of the fair's celebration of technological progress. The Exposition's Manufactures and Liberal Arts Building alone covered 44 acres, housing industrial exhibits from around the world, while the Electricity Building demonstrated the transformative potential of the new age of power. Awards and medals played a central role in the Exposition's mission to recognize excellence — over 25,000 awards were distributed to exhibitors across various categories. The silver-plated finish on this specimen indicates it was intended for a presentation or display purpose rather than general sale. Silver plating over copper was a common technique for producing medals with a precious-metal appearance at modest cost, and it provides a more lustrous surface than the bare copper version cataloged under the same Eglit number.
Rarity Notes
Scarce presentation-quality medal. The silver-plated version is rarer than the plain copper striking, as plated examples were typically reserved for display or award purposes. Few appear in the marketplace.
