Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Bronze award or souvenir medal from the Southern Exposition held in Louisville, Kentucky from August 1, 1883 to October 31, 1883. Organized to showcase the South's recovery and industrial progress following the Civil War and Reconstruction era, the exposition attracted over 770,000 visitors. Thomas Edison illuminated the fairgrounds with over 4,600 incandescent lights—one of the largest electrical lighting demonstrations to date. Fantasy and novelty pieces occupy a distinct niche within American numismatics, appealing to collectors who appreciate creative design, popular culture references, and the playful extension of medallic traditions into contemporary themes. Third-party grading services have brought standardized condition assessment to the medal market, helping establish transparent pricing and increasing collector confidence in authentication and quality evaluation. A subsequent exposition was held in Louisville in 1884 and 1887.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Commemorative souvenir from the Southern Exposition held in Louisville, Kentucky, 1883–1887, an annual fair promoting Southern industry and commerce during the Reconstruction recovery era. The exposition occupied a massive building on the Ohio River and attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year; souvenir tokens from its run are modestly scarce and collected both for their numismatic merit and as Southern Americana.
