Description

Discovered by James Cornish in April 1979, the 1892-O Morgan Dollar VAM-8 is cataloged at DPIS 181 and features a Doubled 1-2 in the date: the 1 is doubled below its upper crossbar, and the 2 is doubled on its top. A small bump appears inside the top loop of the 9 at the 10:00 position, providing an additional obverse marker. The date is described as Near Date in its positioning. Marks between denticles below the 92 of the date could potentially represent a misplaced date element, but the feature is too minor for a definitive ruling, and no determination was issued by Leroy Van Allen, co-author of the foundational VAM reference and whose rulings on disputed attributions carry catalog authority. The 1892-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at New Orleans, and VAM-8 remains a well-referenced entry in the O-mint Morgan Dollar variety literature.
