1892-O VAM-4
Error
Description
First discovered in October 1975 and revised in 2009, the 1892-O Morgan Dollar VAM-4 is classified III2 3 C3b and is defined by Doubled 8 and Hair Split Ends combined with a High O mintmark. On the obverse, the 8 in the date is slightly doubled at the top inside of the upper loop, and split lower hair ends from die doubling are visible below the cap. The reverse is C3b, with the O mintmark set high. VAM-4, VAM-4A, and VAM-4B all share the same obverse and reverse dies, representing successive die states rather than distinct die combinations. VAM-16 has been eliminated from the census as a duplicate of VAM-4 — a consolidation that reduces the 1892-O population list and increases the effective population of VAM-4. The 1892-O Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint in 90% silver. The High O reverse, doubled 8, and hair split ends on the obverse provide a complete attribution profile for VAM-4 and its associated die state variants. =1892-O VAM-4 Doubled 8 & Hair Split Ends, High O= Discovered by October 1975.
