1892-O VAM-16

Description

Discovered by C. Logan McKechnie in June 2006 and subsequently eliminated as the same die as VAM-4, this VAM-16 of the 1892 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar illustrates the self-correcting nature of the VAM classification system. The variety features an 8 in the date slightly doubled at the top inside of the upper loop, combined with split lower hair ends caused by die doubling. Classified as obverse die III213 with a C3a reverse, the doubling on the 8 and the split hair ends provided sufficient diagnostic features to warrant initial listing as a separate variety. However, subsequent research determined this die pairing was identical to the previously cataloged VAM-4, leading to the "Eliminated" notation. Eliminated VAMs are not deleted from the record but are retained with a cross-reference to the surviving listing, preserving the research trail and preventing future rediscovery under yet another number. The 1892-O Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint during the Gilded Age, as the nation debated silver monetary policy. C. Logan McKechnie's contribution demonstrates the collaborative nature of VAM research, where individual discoveries are submitted, peer-reviewed, and either confirmed as new varieties or identified as duplicates of existing listings. The doubled 8 and split hair ends remain valid diagnostics — they simply belong to VAM-4 rather than a separate variety.
