1892-O VAM-14

Description

Discovered by Marc Serafine in September 2001, this 1892-O Morgan Dollar is classified as VAM-14 III212 · C3a (Doubled 1-92 & Stars), die pair (181). The obverse (III212) displays extensive doubling across multiple elements: the 1 is doubled below the upper crossbar, the 9 is slightly doubled at the lower inside of the upper loop, and the 2 is slightly doubled at the top outside of the upper loop. Beyond the date, all left stars and the first three right stars show doubling toward the rim, making this one of the more broadly doubled obverse dies among 1892-O VAMs. The reverse is a normal die (C3a). No Die Pair Identification Specifics (DPIS) have been assigned. The breadth of affected elements — three date digits plus seven or more stars — indicates a significant hub displacement that impacted a wide swath of the obverse design. Serafine’s 2001 discovery expanded the 1892-O catalog during a period when digital photography and internet communication were accelerating the pace of new VAM documentation. New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollars from the early 1890s are actively collected for their mint mark varieties and die characteristics.
