Error
Description
ELIMINATED — determined in 2014 to be the same die pair as VAM-2A. Originally discovered by Marc Serafine in September 2001, VAM-13A documented a Doubled 92, High O, Pitted Trust variety on the 1892-O Morgan Dollar. Plate designation: 13A III29 · C3b, plate (181). The obverse showed doubling on the numerals 92 in the date, while the reverse carried an O mintmark set high above its standard position. Pitting was visible around the right side of TRUST on the obverse — surface degradation transferred as a rough, textured area onto struck coins, likely caused by rust forming on the die face during inactivity. The elimination of VAM-13A in favor of VAM-2A reflects ongoing catalog refinement, where independent discoveries sometimes document the same die pair under different numbers until comparison reveals duplication. Serafine's attribution work remains valuable as a cross-reference. Coins previously attributed as VAM-13A should be identified under VAM-2A. New Orleans Mint production.
