Description

Originally discovered by Marc Serafine in September 2001, the 1892-O VAM-13 was eliminated from the active catalog in 2014 after researchers determined it was the same die marriage as VAM-2. Its classification read 13 III29 with designation C3b (Doubled 92, High O), die pair 181, describing an obverse with doubled digits — the 9 doubled at the bottom inside its upper loop and the 2 at the top outside — paired with a reverse bearing a medium O mintmark set high. The elimination reflects the VAM community's rigorous catalog maintenance, where varieties initially assigned separate numbers are consolidated when study reveals they represent identical die pairings rather than distinct marriages. For provenance purposes, coins previously attributed as VAM-13 should now be referenced as VAM-2, which retains the same die characteristics. The doubled 92 and high O mintmark position remain valid diagnostics under the VAM-2 designation.
