Description

1891-P VAM-5 Doubled 1-1 Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, February 1982 — attributed by one of the co-creators of the VAM classification system itself. Die pair: 5 III2 5 - C3a (Doubled 1-1) (190) Obverse III2 5: First 1 in the date doubled as a line below the upper crossbar, where the secondary hub impression left a thin shadow beneath the horizontal stroke. Second 1 doubled slightly at the top outside, with extra metal visible at the upper terminus of the vertical stroke. "Doubled 1-1" denotes that both instances of the numeral 1 in 1891 exhibit doubling — a diagnostic requiring examination of each digit independently, as the doubling manifests differently on the first and second 1. Van Allen's personal discovery in 1982 places it among the foundational attributions from the VAM system's formative decades, when Van Allen and A. George Mallis were building the comprehensive die pair catalog that would define Morgan and Peace Dollar variety collecting for generations.
