1891-P VAM-4

Description

Originally designated as a doubled date variety, VAM-4 of the 1891 Morgan Dollar was discovered by Maurice Dubreuil in April 1978 and identified by the doubling at the top outside of the second numeral 1 in the date. Cataloged as 4 III2 4 C3a, the obverse carries a Type III2 die with the fourth die pairing, showing the second 1 doubled at its top outside edge where a faint secondary impression is visible adjacent to the primary digit. This doubling resulted from a slight shift between hub impressions during die preparation. However, this designation has since been relisted as 1891-P VAM-5, meaning the original VAM-4 catalog entry was reassigned and collectors should search under the VAM-5 designation for current attribution and population data. The 1891 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams during the final decade of the series. Relisting occurs when the VAM cataloging community determines that an entry requires reclassification, and specimens matching the original VAM-4 description now properly belong under the VAM-5 number.
