Description

Recognized as a Top 100 Morgan Dollar VAM, the 1891-P VAM-2B commands particular attention among variety collectors. Discovered by Mark Kimpton in September 2004 and classified III2 2 with a C3a reverse and die pair 189, this variety is designated "Doubled Ear, Clashed Obverse n." The defining obverse feature is a clashed die impression: a partial incuse n from the reverse word "In" appears next to Liberty's neck, transferred during a clash event when the dies met without an intervening planchet. This represents an earlier die state than the 1891-P VAM-2A, which exhibits a die break at the mustache—though VAM-2B was reported later despite being the chronologically earlier state. The doubled ear provides an additional diagnostic beyond the clashed n. Top 100 VAM status ensures strong collector demand and premium pricing across all grades, making this one of the more commercially significant varieties in the 1891 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar series. Die-state sequencing between VAM-2A and VAM-2B offers collectors an instructive study in how attribution numbers do not always follow chronological die progression.
