Description

Discovered in 2013, the 1891 New Orleans Morgan Dollar VAM-5A is cataloged as 5A III2 1 C3c, described as O/O Top with Denticle Impressions on the Reverse. The variety shares both obverse and reverse dies with 1891-O VAM-5. The reverse, classified as C3c, carries two raised triangles below the lower olive cluster with spacing identical to the obverse denticle points — transferred geometry from the obverse die, indicating the dies contacted each other in a manner that left peripheral elements impressed onto the opposing face. The O/O Top mintmark documents a repunched O where the secondary impression is visible above the primary — one of several positions cataloged on New Orleans Morgan Dollars. Additionally, this reverse exhibits a doubled wreath. The combination of repunched mintmark, denticle transfer impressions, and doubled wreath on a single die marriage creates a variety with multiple independent diagnostics spanning three distinct categories of die anomaly, making this one of the more complex attribution challenges among 1891-O Morgan Dollar die marriages.
