Error
Description
VAM-5 on the 1891-O Morgan Dollar was discovered by A. George Mallis in July 1964 — the other half of the Van Allen-Mallis partnership whose jointly developed classification system underpins all Morgan and Peace Dollar variety collecting. Revised in 2010, the variety is catalogued as 5 (revised), obverse III2 1, reverse C3c, die pair 181. The obverse is characterized by a closed 9 in the date. The reverse defines the variety: the O mintmark shows a repunched mintmark with the original punch impression visible as a curved line just above the top of the final O. A horizontal die scratch is also present on the reverse. The 1891-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint. The O/O Top classification describes a repunch in which the secondary mintmark impression appears at the top of the primary O, a positional distinction used to separate this variety from other 1891-O repunched mintmark dies.
