Cataloged as 7 III2 7 - C3a with plate photo 190, this 1890 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar carries the designation "Far Slanted Date" and was discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974. Hinckley, one of the pioneering early researchers in Morgan Dollar die variety attribution, identified a date displaying three distinct positional anomalies: the digit 0 is set higher than the digit 1, the 9 has a closed loop rather than the standard open form, and the entire date is set further right than normal. The "Far" prefix distinguishes this variety from standard slanted date entries by emphasizing the additional lateral displacement — the combination of angular tilt and rightward shift creates a date position substantially different from typical 1890-P dies. Closed versus open digit loops serve as important secondary diagnostics in VAM attribution, as they indicate different punch states or different physical punches used during die preparation.
