Description

NOTE: This variety is identified as a duplicate listing of VAM-12. Discovered in 2013, VAM-30 of the 1890 Morgan dollar is designated III2 28 C3a as Double Ear Right Inside, Thread-like Impression M, from die pair (190). The obverse type III2 28 shows the right inside of the ear slightly doubled, accompanied by curved thread-like die impressions at the right of the designer's initial M. The date sits at the right edge of the normal lateral position. The reverse carries a standard C3a die. Because VAM-30 has been determined to duplicate the characteristics of VAM-12, collectors and attributors should be aware that coins matching this description may be more properly assigned to the earlier VAM-12 designation. Duplicate listings occasionally arise in the VAM catalog when varieties are independently discovered and cataloged before the match to an existing entry is recognized. The 1890 Philadelphia Morgan dollar saw a mintage of over 16 million pieces, and the thread-like die impressions near the M provide a distinctive visual marker that links both the VAM-30 and VAM-12 designations to the same die pair.
