Description

Exhibiting doubling across multiple design elements on both obverse and reverse, this 1890 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar was discovered by Martin Field in January 1985 and carries the designation "Doubled Wreath." On the reverse, the wreaths are doubled slightly toward the rim, while the letters N, G, W, and U in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST show slight doubling — the effect concentrated on select letters rather than the entire inscription. The obverse mint mark is set high relative to its normal position, providing an additional diagnostic for attribution. The VAM plate reads 18 III2 1 - C3h, where the reverse die class C3h is a less common classification that distinguishes this from the prevalent C3a pairing seen on many other Morgan Dollar varieties. Wreath doubling on the reverse is an uncommon feature compared to the more frequently documented date and motto doubling, making this variety diagnostically distinctive. The combination of wreath doubling, partial motto doubling, and a high-set mint mark creates a triple-diagnostic variety where obverse and reverse each carry identifying characteristics. The 1890-O was produced in moderate quantity at New Orleans, and Martin Field's 1985 documentation added this multi-feature variety to the growing VAM catalog during a productive period of research.
