Error
Description
Discovered by Michael Disorbo in December 2001, the 1890-P VAM-22 stands out as a reverse-focused variety in the Philadelphia Morgan Dollar series. Cataloged as 22 III21 with a C3d reverse, the variety displays slight doubling on the top of In God We Trust, the bottom inside of United States of America, and some outside leaves in the right wreath doubled toward the rim. The III21 obverse type designation distinguishes this die from the more common III2 classification seen across many Morgan varieties. Disorbo's identification of the reverse doubling on both the legend lettering and wreath elements demonstrates how careful examination of the reverse can reveal varieties that obverse-focused cherrypickers might overlook. The C3d reverse classification places this among a smaller subset of reverse die types within the 1890-P series.
