1890-P VAM-20

Description

Marc Serafine identified this variety in September 2001, and it was cataloged as the 1890-P VAM-20 Morgan Dollar with classification 20 III220 - C3a from die pair 191. Two features define the obverse: the right inside of the ear appears slightly doubled, and the date sits noticeably further right than the standard position — described as a very far date. An important caveat accompanies the ear doubling: it is a transitory die feature that may not appear consistently across all specimens, so collectors should not rely solely on the doubled ear for attribution. The very far date placement serves as the more stable diagnostic. Paired with reverse die C3a, this regular strike Philadelphia issue from the later Morgan Dollar production years offers an interesting study in die characteristics that vary across a single die's lifespan.
