Description
Originally discovered in 2013 by Ray Castro, known in the collecting community as Hobocarver, the 1890 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar VAM-1J was cataloged as 1J III21 C3a, the Raised Bump Nose Front variety with a raised metal bump in the field in front of Liberty's nose. However, this variety was eliminated on July 6, 2014, when researchers determined it was the same die pair as the established VAM-14. The reclassification notes indicate that specimens attributed as VAM-1J should be checked for VAM-14's diagnostics: a slanted date, doubled ear, and distinctive profile characteristics. The commentary further notes that while most examples with the nose bump are likely VAM-14 specimens, some VAM-14 coins may not exhibit this bump, suggesting it is a die stage feature that developed during service rather than a constant marker.
