1890-P VAM-19A

Description

Discovered in October 2022 by Roger Bradshaw, VAM-19A is a relatively recent addition to the 1890 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar die marriage catalog, classified under the Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis attribution system. The obverse carries the III2 19 die designation, while the reverse is identified as C3a, exhibiting a doubled ear and a distinctive die break between the letters ER in AMERICA. Two die cracks connecting the E and R have progressed into a full die break, indicating significant deterioration of the reverse die in that region. Additional die chips appear at the top left of the second S in STATES and extending from the top left serif of M in AMERICA, providing secondary attribution markers. The Die Pair Identification System (DPIS) assigns this pair LH3/RE4 coordinates. Philadelphia struck approximately 16.7 million Morgan Dollars in 1890, the thirteenth year of the series mandated by the Bland-Allison Act and its successor, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890. VAM-19A's late discovery date — more than 130 years after the coins were struck — demonstrates that new die marriages continue to surface as researchers examine previously overlooked specimens.
