1890-O VAM-7A

Description

Clayton Christianson discovered this New Orleans Morgan Dollar variety in March 2005. Cataloged as VAM-7A, classified III24, C3b (Slanted Date, High O, Spiked Eagle's Neck) (181), this variety combines three distinct features. The obverse displays a slanted date, where the digits tilt from their normal horizontal alignment. The reverse carries the O mint mark in a high position and features a horizontal die gouge extending from the left side of the eagle's neck along with a gouge at the top of the head, creating the distinctive "spiked" appearance that gives this variety part of its name. The spike-like projection from the eagle's neck resulted from a die gouge that transferred as a raised line on the struck coin. Notably, this variety also comes in a clashed state documented as 1890-O VAM-7B, where the dies struck each other without a planchet between them, leaving transferred design impressions.
