Description

Cataloged as III2 5, C3b (Far Date, High O, Clashed n), die pair 181, the 1890-O Morgan Dollar VAM-14B was discovered in 2012. The obverse shows a clashed die with a faint partial incuse of the lowercase n from IN on the reverse visible next to Liberty's neck, documenting an earlier die state than the related VAM-14A. The reverse is classified as C3b. An important catalog note establishes that VAM-14, VAM-14A, and VAM-14B are all unique die pairs with no common dies shared among the three varieties. This means each represents a completely independent die marriage despite sharing similar descriptive characteristics, and collectors should not assume any die linkage between them. The earlier die state relative to VAM-14A, evidenced by the faint clash mark, positions VAM-14B chronologically in the die's production sequence before the more advanced deterioration seen on its companion varieties.
