1890-O VAM-13

Description

Attributed to Martin Field in July 1979, the 1890-O VAM-13 is classified as Near Date, High O on this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar. The die pair is designated 13 III2 6 - C3b, plate (181). On the obverse (III2 6), the date is set further left than normal, earning the "Near Date" classification — the date logotype was positioned closer to the rim during die preparation than on standard 1890-O dies. The reverse (C3b) features a mint mark set high and upright — the O sits noticeably above its typical position between the eagle's tail feathers and the wreath bow, and its vertical orientation contrasts with the tilted placements seen on other 1890-O varieties. Date position and mint mark placement varieties are foundational collecting categories for Morgan Dollars, as both features were applied by hand to each working die, producing measurable variations that the VAM system has cataloged systematically. Field's contributions during the late 1970s were instrumental in establishing the early VAM catalog framework.
