Description

Discovered on October 31, 2013, this New Orleans Morgan dollar was originally cataloged as VAM-16B under classification III2 1 with a C3m reverse, titled High O Shifted Right, Denticle Impressions Below Ribbon, and carrying a rarity rating of 181. The variety was subsequently renumbered to VAM-37 in November 2022. The obverse carries a small die scratch at the bottom inside of the ear as its primary die marker. On the reverse, raised dots appear at the bottom edge of the wreath bowknot and left ribbon with spacing of 0.030" and 0.025", accompanied by a raised triangle below the dot at the knot with 0.020" spacing. Denticle impressions, somewhat distorted by the ribbon edge curves, complete the reverse diagnostics. The high O mintmark shifted to the right distinguishes the reverse die, while the denticle impressions suggest contact between the die face and collar or adjacent hardware during production. Collectors previously attributing specimens as VAM-16B should update their records to reflect the VAM-37 renumbering.
