1890-CC VAM-5

Description

Paul Williams discovered VAM-5 in August 1966, cataloging it as class III2 1 · C3e — Doubled CC Top. On the reverse, both mintmark letters show repunching: the left C carries a faint shadow outline at the top outside and a small dot at the lower inside, while the right C is strongly doubled at the top outside as a distinct arc at upper left, a spike above the right serif, and extra metal at the lower left inside. The 1890-CC Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver issue from the Carson City Mint. VAM-5 shares the exact same obverse and reverse die pair as VAM-5A, making the two sister varieties distinguishable only by die progression evidence. VAM-5A runs approximately twice as common as VAM-5, meaning confirmed VAM-5 specimens carry a proportionally higher collector premium. Under 5x–8x magnification, examiners should focus on the right C doubling first — the arc and spike combination is the most diagnostic element and resolves cleanly even on well-circulated coins.
