1890-CC VAM-3

Description

Carrying the highly coveted CC mintmark of the Carson City Mint — among the most avidly collected mintmarks in American numismatics — this 1890-CC Morgan Dollar is classified as VAM-3 III2 2 C3c (Doubled 90) (178). Discovered by George Mallis in July 1964, it was among the earlier VAM attributions for the Carson City series. The Carson City Mint operated from 1870 to 1893 in Nevada, processing Comstock Lode silver, and every CC Morgan commands a substantial premium over equivalent coins from other mints. The obverse, classified III2 2, shows the 9 doubled strongly at the bottom and lower left of the top loop, and the 0 doubled strongly to the lower left. The date is set much further right than normal. Later die state specimens may show only the doubling on the lower left of 9, as polishing removed the subtler doubling on the 0. The reverse, designated C3c, carries a mintmark centered and tilted left. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, this coin belongs to the final years of Carson City operations, adding historical weight to its numismatic appeal. Some later die state specimens show only doubling on lower left of 9 after die polishing.
