1889-P VAM-1A

Description

Discovered by Jim Hart in July 2003, VAM-1A on the 1889-P Morgan dollar carries a complex cataloging history that illustrates the evolving nature of VAM attribution. Originally cataloged as 1A III21 · C3a (Clashed Obverse n), die pair 190, this variety shows a clashed die with a partial incuse lowercase "n" from the reverse word "In" visible next to Liberty's neck on the obverse. Die clashing transfers design elements from one die to the other when they make contact without a planchet, and the transferred "n" serves as clear evidence of such an event. However, the cataloging note reveals that VAM-1A was subsequently eliminated as a standalone variety and became VAM-52, incorporating additional diagnostics: die gouges on the front of the neck and the right star, plus a doubled ear. This reclassification means collectors holding coins attributed as VAM-1A should re-examine them under the VAM-52 criteria. The elimination and reassignment of VAM numbers is a normal part of the ongoing research process — as more examples surface and additional die characteristics are discovered, the catalog evolves to provide more accurate and comprehensive attributions. Philadelphia struck approximately 21.7 million Morgan dollars in 1889, and the transition from VAM-1A to VAM-52 documents a specific moment in the collective research effort to catalog every die marriage from that substantial production run.
