1889-P VAM-14

Description

Leroy Van Allen discovered this Philadelphia Morgan dollar in January 1980, with the listing revised in 2011. Cataloged as VAM-14 (revised) under classification III2 14 with a C3a reverse, titled Doubled 18, Tripled 9, Scribbling on Nose, carrying a rarity rating of 190. The 1 is doubled below the base, and the left 8 is slightly doubled at the bottom outside of the lower loop. The 9 is tripled at the top outside, though the doubling is not as strong as on VAM-6, a useful comparison point when sorting between the two related varieties. The date sits at the right edge of the normal lateral position with a slight slant, the 9 resting higher than the 1. Light scribbling die scratches cross the nose in front of the eye, giving the variety its distinctive facial diagnostic. Collectors should note that the formerly listed 1889-P VAM-50, now delisted, was identified as the same variety as 1889-P VAM-14A.
