Description
This Morgan dollar die variety is documented in the Van Allen-Mallis (VAM) reference catalog, which classifies die marriages based on specific obverse and reverse die characteristics. 1887-S VAM-8A Far Date, Scratches RI Discovery October 2021 by Gary Redfeather (Keil). III2 6 - C3a (Far Date, Scratches RI) (?) Obverse III 6 - Two thin die scratches at denticles above RI of PLURIBUS. These scratches disappear in later die stages as die wears near denticles and becomes beveled. Reverse: DPIS - RE3/C5 Emission Sequence Obverse: 8, 8A Reverse: Comments: The 1887-S VAM-8 was produced with the exact same OBVERSE die as the 1887-S VAM-8A but they have different reverses!
