1887-S VAM-6

Description

Located by Martin Field in August 1980, VAM-6 is attributed to the 1887-S Morgan Dollar from San Francisco and is distinguished by an unusually leftward date position described as Very Near Date. The die pair is classified as 6 III2 5 with a C3a reverse, carrying die pair identification number 186. The die pair identification sequence was not recorded for this variety. The obverse die shows the date set noticeably further left than standard placement, positioning the numerals closer to the denticles and rim. Date placement on Morgan Dollars was determined during die preparation, where date logotypes were punched by hand — variations in punch position from die to die are among the most common sources of cataloged varieties throughout the series. The reverse die carries the C3a designation, indicating a normal die. San Francisco's 1887 production continued under the silver coinage mandate in force since 1878. The Very Near Date characteristic makes this variety identifiable without high magnification, as the leftward shift is apparent through direct comparison with normally positioned dates on other specimens of the issue. =1887-S VAM-6 Very Near Date= Discovered by Martin Field, August 1980.
