1886 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1886-01
Error
Description
Among the oldest coin types in our error catalog, this 1886 Seated Liberty Dime records an atypical die clash — a collision between obverse and reverse dies without a planchet present, but with the dies misaligned or tilted rather than meeting in standard parallel contact. Cataloged by MadDieClashes as ADC-1C-1886-01, atypical clashes produce transferred design impressions at unexpected angles and positions, distinct from the symmetrical transfers of normal clashes. Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design, introduced on the dime in 1837 and continuing through 1891, depicts Liberty seated on a rock holding a shield and liberty pole with a Phrygian cap. By 1886, this neoclassical design was in its fiftieth year on the denomination — late in the series, with the Barber Dime only five years away. Struck in 90% silver at 17.9mm, the thin dies required for this small denomination were susceptible to stress concentrations that produce clash marks when dies meet without intervening metal. Inspect both sides for design element transfers at non-standard angles — the signature of dies that struck each other at an atypical orientation.
